Ocodri Parish gets the 10th Priest
Written by Martin Andua

Godfrey Aluonzi became the 10th priest to be ordained from Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish, Ocodri in the 39 year history of the existence of the parish since 1972. The ordination which took place on the 6th August at the parish attracted a large congregation of the faithful. During the same ceremony, seminarians Tom Walter Amati (Ocodri parish), Patrick Mawa and Geoffrey Edami (Aripea parish) were ordained deacons.

The parish which was initially part of the present Aripea parish was established in October 1970 and obtained its maiden priest about eighteen years later in 1988 in the person of Fr. Cosmas Alule, the current Rector of Alokolum National Major Seminary. At its inception the parish was headed by the Late Fr. Sabino Anyanzo as Parish Priest and Fr. Fredrick Drandua (later Bishop of Arua, and now Emeritus) as the curate. Among the ten priests produced by the parish, there are three missionaries- one Comboni and two Apostles of Jesus. One of the ten has since been called to eternal life (late Gervasio Matua-RIP).

The Bishop of Arua Diocese, Rt. Rev. Sabino Ocan Odoki, in his speech urged the Christians to always work hard and utilise the resources that God has provided for development. He stated that there should be no excuse for lack of resources as the colonialists used the resources they found in Africa for initiating the developments at the time of their rule in Africa. The Bishop reported that despite some challenges, the Diocese of Arua was one of the strong Dioceses in the country. He cited the concept of the small Christian communities as one strong pillars and unique to the Diocese, among others.

Mr. Anguti Alex, who spoke on behalf of the family and clan of the new priest, said that through the ordination of Fr. Godfrey, they had paid back a big debt of many years to God because the clan had been sending many people to the seminary, but none had so far made it to the alter. He expressed the gratitude and happiness of the entire Orivu clan for breaking the long wait for a priest in the clan.

fraluonziFr. Godfrey was educated in Sts.Peter & Paul Minor Seminary before proceeding to Alokolum and Ggaba National Seminaries for his studies in Philosophy and Theology. He holds a first class degree in Philosophical & Social Studies and a degree in Theology (all awarded by Urbaniana University in Rome). The new Priest held his first Holy Mass the following Sunday at his home which is in Aribio chapel where he baptised seventeen infants and administered marriage to one couple. Fr. Godfrey has been posted as curate of Obongi Parish in Moyo.
